Generally, Fun Facet Friday involves me sharing an upbeat music video to start the weekend off on a positive note. Today, I decided to share the latest mini movie my son, Tarik, is in. He is the roommate Parker. It is a lighthearted flick that will give you a chuckle.

This past Saturday, Jillian one of my fellow Toastmaster at Gelfand, delivered a speech about Artemisia Gentileschi, the painter. Artemisia was a 17th century painter that one may say broke the glass ceiling of her day in the art arena. Women were not allowed in the circle of male Italian Baroque painters. Artemisia was fortunate that her father, Orazio, also a painter, encouraged her to paint. Her paintings are admired today all around the world.
Like women of Artemisia’s time, many people are still blocked from certain circles or jobs because of gender, race, sexual orientation, etc today. I recall that in the 1990’s I went for a job interview for a technical consultant position. The interviewer point blank told me that he had never interviewed a woman for position before. He made no attempt to disguise his belief that a woman did not have the knowledge or experience to perform the job. Needless to say, I didn’t get the job. A few months later his entire department was released due to downsizing.
I didn’t let this person’s opinion stop me from pursuing the position of technical consultant. I not only got the position in a different department, but I also go promoted later as the sales engineer manager. Don’t let others tell you what you cannot do or that your dreams cannot be achieved. Push forward and let ‘em hear you “Roar” as Katy Perry sings in her song!
Has it been a crazy week? Feeling overwhelmed? Well it’s Friday! Although it is a rainy day in Florida…I plan to Soak Up the Sun by making my own sunshine. Won’t you take a break with me and just dance? Here is Sheryl Crow’s video that may help you make your own sunshine!!!

“Do not be like the cat who wanted a fish but was afraid to get his paws wet.” ~ William Shakespeare
Many people have dreams, if act upon, can benefit not only themselves but also others. Yet, they let fear and doubt keep them from putting their feet into the water. They envision all types of obstacles or situations that would prevent them from being successful in making these dreams a reality.
Dream, plan, act then jump in. Don’t be afraid to Get Wet to taste the victory of catching that fish!

“Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” ~ Helen Keller
It is no surprise that Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy” is such a successful hit with many people across age groups, cultures and nations. People enjoy being happy. I haven’t met many people who enjoy being sad or down. In fact, most successful people I meet seem generally happy.
In the infancy of my corporate career, one of my managers called me into his office one morrning. He pointed out that my attitude was affecting the team. He said that when I came into the office with a great attitude it was as though the sun was shining. When I came in with a bad attitude, the place was gloomy. Whether I knew it or not many of my team members saw me as leader. As such everyone around me couldn’t help but become contagious with my attitude: good or bad.
This was an eye opener for me. I became more aware of my impact on others because of my attitude. Now most often I choose to be happy. This doesn’t mean that I don’t have bad days, it just means I choose how I react to each situation. By choosing to see things working out for the best, I feel better and happier. Happiness is a choice and is within you. Take Helen Keller’s advice “Keep Happy!”
