“What about a Diamond Jewelry store?” She said excitedly over the phone. My friend Lydia and I were strategizing where to have my book launch last March 2014. We were discussing possible places to invite folks to share in my special day.

Normally, book launches are conducted at bookstores or libraries. Since my book is titled: Live a Diamond Life, A Life of Purpose: Diamond Cutters, Lydia suggested that I conduct the event in a Diamond Jewelry store. I thought it was a brilliant idea.

After researching online, I immediately reached out to a few local diamond Jewelers. Jewelry Depot Inc., the store I really liked is a family owned business. It was established more than 30 years in the community. When I called and spoke with the store manager, Lillian Sanders, I explained what I wished to do. She said: “You do know this is a Diamond Jewelry store and not a bookstore?” I told her I did, but it would be exciting and an honor to launch my book in that store.

She said she would present my proposal to the owner who was out of town. The next morning as I was walking out of a meeting, she called and told me the owner liked the idea. He wanted to meet with me to discuss it further. He has never done this.

The day I met with Ted, the owner, I brought a bottle of wine and a copy of my book for him. I told him that I wrote the book to help others learn how to live their purpose. I told him this occurred because my dad regretted not living his purpose on his deathbed. I told him I used the Diamond as metaphor to help my audience to understand how valuable each one is.

Ted loved my story and agreed to have me launch the book in his beautiful store. He even allowed me to put up a giant poster board and flyers in the store to announce the event. We agreed to schedule the event the weekend prior to Mother’s Day. Here is a copy of the flyer.

The day of the event was one of the worst downpour of rain. But it didn’t stop the folks from coming to the event. I was humbled by my friends, family and associates that braved the inclement weather to support my launch. It was a wonderful day for both the folks in Jewelry Depot Inc. and me. The attendees purchased my book and also bought jewelry for Mother’s Day gifts. It was a win-win experience.

As an entrepreneur, one has to move outside the conventional box in which we sometimes put ourselves, or society tells us we ought to be in it. Think of different ways to offer your service or deliver your product. Be innovative. If you need help, reach out to a friend or someone you trust his/her judgment. The cliche: two heads are better than one, is so true when you select the right person.

Lydia, Lillian and Ted saw my vision and helped me to experience one of the most memorable occasions of my life. Their inputs help pushed me in a different direction for marketing and selling my books. It proved to be a successful one.

Are you an entrepreneur and want to established you business for success? Are you struggling with a problem that perplexes you? In my experience, sometimes you need to move outside the box to find a great solution.

Treasures Thursday – Two Hearts

The day I knew you were formed in me
I knew I had gained another heart
A Heart that beats along with yours
A heart that skips a beat
Each time we part

This heart cries when you cry
Rejoices when you are happy
Breaks when you ache
Prays for you for heaven’s sake

It was rendered weak
When you carried your first cross
Of life’s unexpected blow
Unfair love loss

This mother’s heart
May dream for you,
Cheer for you,
Even May die for you

But it cannot Live for you, my son
Not even for a day
That’s the only way
These two hearts can stay

“Dreams without goals are just dreams…and they ultimately fuel disappointments.” ~ Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington said this quote to a group of young aspiring actors. This statement is appropriate for anyone at any age. It is great to have a dream, but if you don’t create a plan that includes goals to achieve this dream…it won’t come into being.

Yet creating the plan is only the beginning. Implementing the plan is the next step. If you don’t put your plan into effect, what good is it to you. Finally finish that plan strong. Many times we start something only to leave it incomplete due to obstacles, lack of passion or lack of assistance. You shouldn’t let these prevent you from fulfilling your dream. Doing so will, as Denzel puts it: “fuel disappointments.”

You have dreams. Believe that you will attain them. Create a plan filled with attainable goals. Implement the right sweat equity actions. Then finish Strong! Living your Diamond Dream Life, your Life of Purpose.

JUMP!

Remember when you were young and knew you were invincible? When you knew you could climb walls, trees and conquer the world? Or the day you graduated from high school, college, etc. and you were going to achieve all those wonderful dreams? Then life crept in with all its limitations, obstacles and doubts to box you into fear of losing, failing, and crossing the line?

Well it’s time to reclaim those childhood fortitude again! Recently, I visited Jamaica (land of my birth) and went swimming in one of its beautiful rivers, White River. Some of the folks I went with challenged me to jump off the side of the river from a rope into the water. I was terrified, but the 12-year-old boy, Junior, that was with us encouraged me. He said “Miss, you can do it. Jump!” We agreed to encourage each other…he was scared also, but he was willing to try.

Drawing on my inner child, I took hold of the rope, sent up a prayer and jumped. To my great surprise and pleasure, I thoroughly enjoyed the jump. I enjoyed it so much that I jumped a few more times. Junior accompanied me and we screamed with excitement. Sometimes it takes a child to remind you that you can do it. Junior certainly reminded me of this. We should believe in our abilities to accomplish the goals we desire to reach; just like children do.

What are you afraid of doing? What dreams did you lay aside, thinking you don’t have the ability to do it? Have a talk with your inner child, pray and JUMP! Keep Living a Diamond Life! Live a Life of Purpose on Invincible Monday.
