One of my mentors, Hugo Arce, said this to me many years ago: “Marlene, losers like to hold hands.” We were talking about relationships and he was counseling me on choosing wisely the folks I let into my life. He was so on target with this advice. I have made the mistake of letting the wrong people in my inner circle. I’m sure most of you have also. These are the people who at first blush seem to want to be your best friends or mates.
Understand that people are attracted to the radiance of a diamond. If the diamond within you is shining brightly, these folks will be drawn to you. They may start out great, but then you notice that they are doing everything to keep that diamond light for themselves. They want to be known as the keeper of the diamond, you. They want to hold hands with you. Worse yet, they may want to put out that light and turn you into a lump of coal.
We generally know the signs and we ignore them when we meet these folks. Unfortunately, they may be in our very own family. Choose wisely, my friends, and let go of the losers’ hands. We can still love and pray for them, but do so from afar. Bring positive folks into your life. Select those who help that diamond light to shine even brighter.
